Dental insurance is insurance designed to pay a portion of the costs associated with dental care which help make procedures, equipment, and general care more affordable. This type of insurance is similar to many other forms of insurance. There are monthly or yearly premiums to obtain this insurance. The insurance carrier will pay for part of the dental care up to a maximum amount. The maximum amount covered as well as the percentage that your provider pays for will depend on the type of dental insurance plan you purchased.

The most common types of dental insurance plans are:

  • Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO) Insurance
  • Dental Health Maintenance Organizations (DHMO) Insurance

When choosing a plan it is important to evaluate the cost vs. the benefits and what type of plan best fits your needs. You should evaluate what type of dental care is included which may refer to:

  • Oral hygiene – the practice of keeping the mouth and teeth clean in order to prevent cavities (dental caries), gum disease, and other dental disorders.
  • Dentistry – the professional care of teeth, including professional oral hygiene and dental surgery.
