Motorized Wheelchairs and Power Chairs
Power wheelchairs - sometimes called power chairs or electric wheelchairs - accommodate individuals who experience difficulties with walking and don't have the upper-body strength, dexterity or cardiovascular capacity to use a manual wheelchair. Models allow for mobility and independence in indoor and outdoor conditions and are typically equipped with battery power, a motor, hand controls or a joystick and a base with at least four wheels. For stability, electric wheelchairs generally have two larger wheels that drive or propel the device and smaller wheels, also known as casters, added to enhance stability.
As a significant difference between an electric scooter and a motorized wheelchair, the former involves steering, while the controls on the latter move it forward, backward and side to side.
What is a Power Chair?
Power chairs are built for individuals who need partial or full-time assistance with walking and who don't have the strength to move and turn an electric scooter or manual wheelchair. Like electric scooters, power chairs factor in a range of lifestyles and tend to include travel and lightweight frames that may fold down and heavy-duty and bariatric options for a greater degree of support.
Electric wheelchairs are typically equipped with a combination of the following features:
- Comfort features: Motorized wheelchairs are often equipped with a larger seat, plus armrests, a backrest, a cushion and a footrest. Chairs either have a traditional seat or a captain's seat for more support and features to adjust the positioning.
- Battery power: Compared to scooters, electric wheelchairs have a larger battery and often travel farther on a single charge. This component is part of the power base, which additionally includes the motor.
- Wheels and casters: Drive wheels propel the chair forward, and at least two casters help improve stability. Larger wheels plus front-wheel drive typically mean the chair can travel over uneven terrain. Chairs are either built with pneumatic wheels, which need to be inflated, or foam wheels, and often have center-wheel drive for better maneuverability.
- Controls: Located at the end of one of the armrests, controls include a joystick for direction and often a keypad for adjusting speed and the chair's incline. Controls may be added to other parts of the chair to accommodate the user's abilities.
